Why You Have Knee Pain While Running (And How to Fix It!)

If you’re a runner who gets knee pain, you need to watch this video.

Hey, I’m Dr. Sheldon Stuckart, chiropractic clinic director at Kaizo Health in Rockville, Maryland.

All right, we’ll show you why you have the knee pain in the first place, what you can do to eliminate that knee pain and how to prevent any further injuries in the future so you can get back to chasing that runner’s high and enjoying running. Come to my office.

To fix your knee pain, we must first figure out what’s causing your knee pain in the first place. So we have a model of your knee. This is your femur, your patella, and your tibia and fibula, which is not labeled. The knee pain can come from the underside of the patella, which can be patellofemoral pain syndrome. You can have tendonitis, quad tendinitis, which would be right here, or a patellar tendinitis right here. Or you can have disruptions in the ligaments, like sprains on the ligaments that are on the outside or the inside of the knee and on the posterior side or the back of the knee, you could have issues with muscles like your popliteus.

I probably used a lot of big words just now. If that all sounds confusing, it is! So getting an x-ray or an MRI would really hone down on what is actually going on in the knee that’s causing your knee pain while you’re running.

If you get the imaging or not, whether it’s x-ray, MRI, CT or any others, we still should evaluate your functionality through the Woodway Gait analysis, which we have at Kaizo Health in Rockville. So as our patient starts running on the Woodway Gait analysis, it tracks through multiple touch points with a camera that tracks its swing, step, length, height, the weight distribution between feet, the hip movement, swaying, it basically tracks overall gait from head to toe. So as the patient is still running, you can see that it’s recording all these data points, whether it’s center of gravity, the incline speed, the contact time between left and right feet, the step length between left and right feet and we get a printed out results right here on this diagram.

Other factors that we can look at, if it’s not muscle imbalances, or from what we found in the x-rays, MRI’s or other exams, are if you’re wearing proper shoes for the running, you have any other conditions above or below the knee or any other lifestyle factors that could be affecting you.

If you’re suffering from knee pain and it’s been stopping you from running, or it really hurts every time you hit the pavement, here’s what you can do to fix it.
