Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
Break Through Scar Tissue. Recover Stronger. Move Better.
At Kaizo Health, we combine the best of science, experience, and innovation to accelerate healing and improve performance. IASTM, often referred to as scraping, is a specialized soft tissue technique that uses precision tools to break down scar tissue, increase blood flow, and promote optimal movement.
Whether you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic muscle tightness, or trying to overcome plateaus in your performance, IASTM can help restore your body’s full potential.
What Is IASTM?
IASTM (Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization) is a manual therapy technique that uses specially crafted stainless steel tools to detect and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction. By gliding these tools over the skin, your provider can identify and break up adhesions and scar tissue that may be limiting your range of motion or causing pain.
This technique enhances the body’s natural healing response, promoting collagen remodeling, improved circulation, and tissue regeneration.
Benefits of IASTM / Scraping
Reduces Pain and Inflammation
Stimulates a controlled inflammatory response that promotes faster healing.
Breaks Up Scar Tissue and Adhesions
Targets dysfunctional tissue caused by previous injuries or overuse.
Improves Range of Motion
Frees up restricted muscle and fascia, restoring flexibility and mobility.
Accelerates Recovery
Boosts circulation and cellular repair to speed up healing post-injury.
Enhances Athletic Performance
Loosens tight muscles, improves movement quality, and reduces risk of injury.
Conditions Commonly Treated with IASTM
Chronic muscle tightness
Tendonitis / Tendinosis (e.g., Achilles, Patellar, Tennis Elbow)
Plantar Fasciitis
IT Band Syndrome
Shin Splints
Neck and Back Pain
Post-surgical scar tissue
Repetitive strain injuries
Myofascial pain and trigger points
IASTM is effective for both acute and chronic conditions, and is often used by athletes, active adults, and rehabilitation patients.
What to Expect During an IASTM Session
At Kaizo Health, our providers begin by assessing your movement and soft tissue health. If IASTM is part of your care plan, here’s what to expect:
🔹 Application of a lubricant to the treatment area
🔹 Gentle strokes with the instrument to locate areas of restriction
🔹 More targeted pressure to mobilize and release adhesions
🔹 Some mild redness may appear—this is a normal response indicating circulation is improving
🔹 Followed by stretching, exercise, or other manual therapy to reinforce mobility gains
Treatment is typically pain-free and well tolerated. Some patients may experience mild soreness similar to post-workout fatigue.
A Key Part of Integrated Therapy
IASTM is most effective when paired with other therapies:
Chiropractic Adjustments
Cupping Therapy
Dry Needling
Flexion Distraction
Personalized Rehab Exercises
Postural Correction & Movement Retraining
At Kaizo Health, we don’t just treat symptoms—we correct the root cause for long-term results.
