Take Charge of Your Health With Massage Therapy

Massage is an often overlooked treatment for many health problems. Just look at what they Mayo Clinic has to say, “Brush aside any thoughts that massage is only a feel-good way to indulge or pamper yourself. To the contrary, massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health and well-being, whether you have a specific health condition or are just looking for another stress reliever.”

Yet, many folks who have not yet experienced the healing power and pure bliss of massage therapy have some questions before jumping on the table.

Our massage therapist, Liz Schneider answers your most common questions.

Q: What types of conditions can massage therapy treat?

A: Many conditions including:

  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Whiplash
  • Tension and Fatigue
  • Sciatica
  • Injuries
  • Headaches
  • Sinus Pain
  • Chronic Pain Conditions
  • Discomfort During Pregnancy
  • Pre- and Post Operative Prep/Recovery

And More!

Q: How often should I get a massage?

A: Depends on your goals. Lifestyle, medical history, needs and comfort determine frequency. For an acute problem, 2-5 massages every 5-7 days may be necessary to get ahead of the pain cycle. Maintenance ranges from once per month, bi-monthly, or quarterly.? I try to accomplish as much as possible in the fewest visits possible. Every minute is maximized in a session.

Q: Does massage have to be painful to be effective?

A: Absolutely not. The therapist should work within your pain tolerance and determine your ideal depth.? In fact, pain during a massage can worsen inflammation, traumatize muscles, induce spasm and corrode client trust. Some muscles can take more pressure, but I inform the client when I change depth of pressure.

Q: Do I have to sign up for a series of massages?

A: No. You control the frequency. The client should feel good about the process and I dislike massage therapists pressuring clients into unnecessary sessions.

Q: Do I have to be a patient to book an appointment?

A: No. Anyone can book an appointment whether they are a current patient, discharged patient or were referred.

Q: Does insurance cover massage?

A: Typically, no. Check with your insurance. The clinic will provide receipts if your insurance covers massage, but it is the client?s responsibility to file with their insurance.

Q: What should I wear for a session?

A: Most clients disrobe to their underwear. Clients are covered with sheets during the massage. Disrobing is preferred, but optional. Some people have religious or personal reasons for remaining clothed and I honor that choice.

Q: Can I substitute massage for physical therapy?

A: Massage is not a substitution for physical therapy or medical care, but it can be a powerful compliment to treatment. Substituting massage for physical therapy can unravel weeks of hard work.
