?Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.? Maya Angelou

I have this sweatshirt that I bought at a Norwegian grocery store in New Jersey years ago that has this printed on the front:

?You can always tell a Norwegian, but you can?t tell him much?

My wife likes to remind me of that often. It?s not really that I am resistant to learning new things or taking advice, or even listening, I am just older and naturally wiser right? But I have tried to force myself to learn new things and along the way have been schooled by many younger than me. Let?s face it I began to learn about social media just this year and that is an area that I had always avoided and quite frankly was a little terrified of. That was the world of younger folks and not one I was comfortable in. But I wandered into blogs and videos as I began to overcome my fear.

A few months back, my nephew Gavin, seeing that I was greatly in need of some direction and without actually calling his uncle a moron, very tactfully had my brother send me an email that said:

?Gavin thought you may like this?

?This? was a link to a You Tube video that very effectively informed Uncle Curt that he suffered from a bad case of VVS.

VVS is short for Vertical Video Syndrome as you may now know if you saw the video in the Facebook post.

I got the point.

Recently another nephew of mine enlightened me. Well I guess he is not really my nephew, he is my cousin?s son, but he has always been like a nephew. If you live in the Eighth Legislative District in Maryland, the Perry Hall, White Marsh area you may be familiar with him because he is a candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates. His name is Christian Miele. I am really proud of Christian, fresh out of law school; he won his primary and is out campaigning for the big seat. So I get to follow a little of his activities thanks again to social media. Sometimes it?s hard for me to know what time zone I am in with my news feed, but Christian posted this not too long ago:

I think the thing I’ll remember most about this experience is the countless kind, welcoming, and — in some cases — inspiring people I’ve met along the way. There is truly nothing better than knocking on the door of a perfect stranger when that stranger later becomes a friend. One of these “perfect strangers” is Pat B. from Fullerton. Pat and I met three weeks ago and had a chance to catch up this evening on Facebook. After discussing the trials and tribulations of nonstop campaigning, Pat shared with me a simple but encouraging quote by Maya Angelou: ?Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.? Win or lose in November, I will count this journey as a success in the story of my life. Thanks, Pat.

I appreciated hearing that. Having recently gone back home to see friends, some I hadn?t seen in forty years, an experience that could also be a little bit terrifying since you naturally go through the checklist of what you have done in your life and wonder if you were successful.

And, if Ms. Angelou?s ?success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it? is on the mark, I think we are all probably more successful than we give ourselves credit for.

So thanks to Christian for sharing that story, it came at a good time for me, and I am confident he will be successful one way or the other.

And as for ?You can always tell a Norwegian, but you can?t tell him much?, I am probably paying more attention than you think. And let me tell you, you also don?t have to be Norwegian to be guilty of that.

Hey if anyone wants the actual link to the VVS You Tube video send me an email. It?s fairly harmless but I didn?t want to include it here.

Have a great weekend!
