SSR Curt Christiansen’s Happier, Healther Me: Week Seven

One of my buddies emailed me after reading my blog. Jim is a marathon runner, ex- Marine, younger than me. Great guy, he is in great shape. He says:

SOOOO, I signed up for the Reston 10 miler on March 2nd 2014. You want to run it with me and keep me entertained?

I thought to myself, you have got to be kidding me! Me run with you? You run marathons! You are an Ex -Marine! You are younger than me! Keep you entertained? Something tells me you will be TOTALLY entertained by me trying to run ten miles!

So I replied politely:

Hey thanks for the invite but I don?t think I am going to be ready for a 10 miler by that day and besides, I run really slow and would hold you back.

Whew, got out of that one. What is he kidding? Me run 10 miles with him? I can?t run ten miles!

Nope, not kidding, he sends me another email:

Well, I quit caring about fast years ago. In some of these types of races it?s all about the end and finishing. I figure I have at least 10 miles of Marine or running stories that will make it easier for you to tolerate those few extra miles.

Oh no, I thought??he?s not giving up??what am I going to say? How am I going to get out of this? I know?. I will lie! I will make something up about doing something with my wife that day..?..wait, I can?t lie to Jim, he?s a buddy from church, and I need forgiveness?..what am I going to do?……ten miles of Marine stories? …..the end and finishing?……..that doesn?t sound good!

So after about two hours of squirming, and looking all over the house for the Ace bandage I could wrap around my knee so that I could limp into church on the Sunday before; frantically trying to find some believable reason why I shouldn?t run this race, I did the honorable thing. If I can?t run 10 miles then I just need to man up and tell Jim I can?t do it.

When I first met my wife she was a big runner. She ran circles around me. One evening I was messing with her and told her she had flabby calves. OOOPS?? (Take my advice, don?t try this at home).

For the next ten Sunday mornings I didn?t see her because she was out running 10K?s to show just how flabby her calves were not, and to show me just how flabby my mouth was.

So maybe this is kind of like the flabby calves situation??who says I can?t run 10 miles? (well, me actually)?.. Would my dad say ?I can?t do it?? Heck no, he would just go do it!

So I got on the Potomac River Running website and registered for the Reston 10 Miler. You know, I just might enjoy those Marine stories. And maybe it won?t be THE end. And maybe, just maybe, I will finish. Hey, and if nothing else I will have fun entertaining my friend and hanging out, and since he?s an ex-Marine, if necessary, he will carry me out.

Semper Fi!

Since there is at least a foot of snow outside my door right now my running week has ended early. So I only managed to do 13.5 miles this week, however I did do an 8 miler on Saturday. Got to get ready to run 10!

And speaking of Potomac River Running, we here at Sport and Spine Rehab are really excited to be working with PRR Elite Race Team as a sponsor in 2014. So if you need some running gear, please show them some support.
