Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be in a family with only one parent, have 5 siblings, and have your mother expecting another child? You are the oldest of the bunch, but only 10 years old. Ultimately, all you want to do is just go to school and be a normal kid. Unfortunately, there aren?t any opportunities for fun. You feel overwhelmed, trapped, and like you don?t have anything other than a hard life ahead of you without a light at the end of the tunnel.
But then, when all seems hopeless, you hear of something new at your school. This something new is called DC Scores. You learn that they will give you an afterschool program full of soccer, poetry, and year round service-based learning. After just a few months in the program, you feel a sense of camaraderie with your teammates, you have a new sense of belonging, and you have finally found your voice in poetry and spoken word; you are everything that everyone said you couldn?t be.
Two weeks ago, Sport and Spine Rehab took part in a charity soccer tournament called Scores Cup benefiting DC Scores, a charity that serves over 1500 youth in 43 different elementary and middle schools in DC. We were one of a record 30 teams participating in this event, which raised over $100,000 for the charity! While we didn?t win, we certainly gave it a valiant effort and most importantly, we had a lot of fun! To view pictures from the Scores Cup, click here!
One of the best things about our team is that we are comprised of nearly all employees and former patients ? yes, people we have helped to get back on the field! Thanks to all of our team who participated!
We also were the medical providers for the hundreds of athletes who played and took care of every injury, concussion screenings, adjustments, ankle tapings, and Kinesio? Taping! We also provided care at the Jamboree on June 1 to over 1500 kids!
All in total, we raised and donated in kind over $4000 to this wonderful cause. We can?t wait to play again next year, and hopefully we bring home the Cup!
