Can a Chiropractor Help with Knee Pain?

Can a Chiropractor Help with Knee Pain?

Do your knees constantly ache? Do you hear a clicking sound while exercising? You might be wondering if a chiropractor can help with knee pain and luckily the answer is “yes”!

Knee pain can commonly be found amongst many age groups. It may be caused by an injury, such as a torn ligament or cartilage, a bone bruise, or a sprain/strain. It can also be caused by arthritis, gout, infections, excess physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, and more.

What are the symptoms of knee pain?

There are several factors that can affect your knee pain. The location of injury, cause of injury, and past injuries can all play a part in how extreme your knee pain can feel.

Your knee pain might start off mild but can increase over time if left untreated. You may experience swelling if your knee pain is caused by inflammation or infection.

Symptoms of a knee injury or condition may include:

  • Inability to fully straighten or bend your leg at the knee
  • Limping or difficulty walking
  • Difficulty squatting down or getting up from sitting or squatting position
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Crunching or crackling sounds in the knee joint

Why Are My Knees Clicking During Exercise?

If you are hearing a clicking or popping noise in your knees during exercise, don’t worry! This can be completely normal. Tiny pockets of air can become trapped in the knee joints over time and burst when the knee bends or extends in a certain way. This is similar to hearing your knuckles or back pop.

However, if you are experiencing pain or discomfort, we recommend working with a chiropractor to prescribe a series of rehabilitative exercises that can help correct this issue.

A chiropractor may use strength building and mobility exercises in addition to stretching and foam rolling.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat Knee Pain?

A chiropractor can treat knee pain with a variety of treatments. Depending on each case, a chiropractor may use adjustments or manipulations to treat knee pain.

They may also use muscle work like myofasical release, active release technique, manual therapy, soft tissue work, dry needling and more.

Another successful way chiropractors treat knee pain is with rehabilitative stretching and exercises to help support, strengthen, increase mobility.

In more severe cases, a chiropractor might recommend treatments such as joint injections to help reduce inflammation so that they can begin rehabilitating the knee.

Treatments such as joint injections should be administered by a licensed, medical practitioner and coordinated with your chiropractor for comprehensive care.

A combination of chiropractic care and rehabilitative exercises or physical therapy has been shown to work best at relieving, treating, and reducing the reoccurrence of knee pain.
